A note on the photos: LatinMusicSeattle.com did not have a photo pass for this show. Every photo here was taken from my seat in the audience on a compact digital camera.

Some venues make you feel like you're at a concert. The 5th Avenue Theatre makes you feel like you're in on a secret. On the second of her two nights in Seattle, Mon Laferte brought the Femme Fatale Tour to the historic downtown theater, and for a couple of hours it felt less like a tour stop and more like a private cabaret where she was singing to each of us, one by one.

A Room Built for Conversation

I've been to shows in almost every room in this city, and few feel as close as this one. At the 5th Avenue, it feels like Mon could hold a conversation with someone in the very back row, and at times she practically did. Every glance, every pause, every little aside landed all the way to the balcony.

It was a seated show, and most of the room stayed that way. That led to a few arguments in the aisles between the fans who wanted to stand and dance and the ones behind them who wanted to see. If you go to a theater show like this, know your section and be kind to your neighbors. What nobody argued about was the love for Mon. Fans passed Mexican, Chilean and Guatemalan flags up to the stage as gifts, a reminder of just how many corners of Latin America were packed into one Seattle theater on a Friday night.

Act One: White Gown, Vintage Mic

The night opened in white. Mon came out in a draped white gown, singing into a vintage microphone, at one point blindfolded, with the curtains behind her washed in pale light and, later, giant red letters. With Halloween one day away, she opened with a special treat, Tonight You Belong to Me, then went into Mi Hombre and the title track, Femme Fatale. Right away the show made its intentions clear: this was a theater production as much as a concert, all old-Hollywood glamour, with jazz and bolero running underneath everything. For Your Consideration and My One and Only Love kept the room hushed and leaning in.

The Moment Everyone Will Remember

Then came the pageant. Mon and two other "contestants" staged a beauty contest skit, competing for the crown by playing the most anti-feminist characters they could: catering to men's needs and desires, saying whatever they thought would win. It was funny, a little uncomfortable, and exactly the point. At the end they dropped the act and revealed they'd been pretending the whole time, and that they hated every second of it. The room roared.

It's the kind of moment that only works with an artist like Mon Laferte, who has never been shy about saying what she thinks, and who can make a theater full of people laugh at the same thing they're supposed to be angry about.

Act Two: Red Dress, Full Band, No Mercy

When she came back, the white was gone. Mon returned in a red satin dress, flanked by dancers in matching red, and the second half leaned into the newest songs: 1:30, El Gran Señor and La Tirana, where the cabaret turned into a full-on party.

From there she worked through Química Mayor and Hello Monserrat, then lightened everything up with Supermercado, and the band only got louder from there until the house lights came up.

The Verdict

The Femme Fatale Tour is Mon Laferte at her most theatrical: costume changes, choreography, a full-on comedy sketch, and a voice that can go from a whisper to a wail without warning. The 5th Avenue Theatre was the right room for it. A bigger venue would have swallowed half of what made this show special. Here, every detail reached the back row.

The seated crowd may not have been the loudest Seattle has ever been, but the flags at the edge of the stage said everything about what this music means to the community here.
